Did you know that throughout your pregnancy — and for 12 months after your baby is born — you’re entitled to free NHS prescriptions and free NHS dental treatment? This support is designed to help you stay well during pregnancy and the early months of parenthood, when your health and wellbeing truly matter.
To access these benefits, you’ll need a valid Maternity Exemption Certificate. Your midwife can help you apply for this, and the process is quick and straightforward.
Why you need a Maternity Exemption Certificate
Your exemption certificate confirms that you’re pregnant or have recently given birth, and it ensures that you won’t be charged for prescriptions or dental care. It’s extremely important to have this certificate before collecting free prescriptions otherwise, you may receive a penalty fine from the NHS, even if you were eligible at the time.
Your midwife will usually complete the application during one of your early appointments, but you can ask at any time if you haven’t received it yet.
Digital certificates for ease and convenience
Most people choose the digital version of the exemption certificate, which is sent directly to your email or the NHS app. This format is:
Easy to access
Quick to show at the pharmacy or dentist
Simple to store on your phone
Less likely to be lost or forgotten
You can screenshot it, save it to your files, or keep it in the NHS App, ready to show whenever a pharmacy or dentist asks for it.
How long does the exemption last?
Your exemption certificate is valid:
During your entire pregnancy,
For 12 months after your baby’s due date
This means you continue receiving free prescriptions and dental care for a full year after your pregnancy ends.
