Finding the right midwife is one of the most important steps in starting your pregnancy journey with confidence. Whether this is your first baby or you’ve experienced pregnancy before, knowing your options helps you choose the support that feels right for you and your family.
What does a midwife do?
Midwives support you through every stage of your pregnancy, birth and early postnatal period. Depending on the type of care you choose, this may include:
Monitoring your health and your baby’s wellbeing
Supporting your emotional needs
Preparing you for labour and birth
Helping you make informed decisions
Offering feeding support after birth
Supporting your recovery in the early days and weeks
Your midwife should make you feel safe, cared for and heard, your pregnancy experience should always reflect your personal needs and wishes.
I just found out I'm pregnant, do I need speak to my GP first?
Although some parents choose to speak to their GP first, you can self refer to a midwife. This can be done by self referring through the NHS website, or through your local health services website. This will ensure that you are seen by your local maternity team. Appointments may be held at a health centre, children's centre or GP surgery.
When should I contact a midwife?
Your first midwife appointment, known as the booking appointment, ideally happens before 10 weeks of pregnancy. This is when your midwife learns about your health, discusses screening options, and helps you plan the early stages of your antenatal care.
If you’re unsure how to begin, reaching out early is always the best approach — even if you only have questions at this stage.
Choosing a private or independent midwife
Alongside NHS care, many families choose the personalised continuity and flexible support offered by private or independent midwives.
Private midwifery offers a range of benefits, including:
Continuity of care from a single midwife
Longer, unhurried appointments
Care arranged in the comfort of your home
Emotional and practical support tailored to your preferences
Flexible appointment times to suit family life
You can choose private care exclusively, or combine it with NHS maternity support. Many people find a blended approach gives them the best of both worlds.
